Campus as a Living Lab

UBC operates and controls its utilities. It has a fleet of over 300 vehicles and an ever growing population. For research purposes, it is a small city. The campus can be used as a living laboratory where technology and different projects can be deployed in a large scale.

Projects

Bioenergy Research and Demonstration Facility

UBC’s Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF) reduces UBC’s GHG emissions by turning waste wood biomass into clean energy and supports research on alternative energy technology.

Biorefining Research and Innovation Centre

The UBC Biorefining Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) is a globally unique, pilot-scale, biomass research, development, and demonstration facility. It aims to reduce the barriers and risks of technology scale-up to market new biofuels and bioproducts which have been identified by industry as the largest challenges to developing successful bioproducts.

Campus Energy Centre

The Campus Energy Centre (CEC) is UBC’s $24 million state-of-the-art hot water boiler facility. Located in the heart of our 1,000 acre campus, the facility is capable of meeting all of UBC’s heating requirements.
